BHTA Past President Berkley Evans Passes Away

Berkley EvansOne of the Bahamian tourism trailblazers Berkley Evans has passed away.  Berkley was President of the then Bahamas Hotel Association in 1983. 

He was the first Bahamian-born President and also the first President from the Family Islands.  At the time he represented the Treasure Cay Resort on Abaco where he was General Manager.   Berkley was an avid supporter of BHTA’s annual golf tournament since its inception 14 years ago. 

We join in extending our condolences to his family.

 

Cruise Passenger Spending Grows 850 Percent

Cruise arrivals to The Bahamas have grown by 76 percent between 2000 and 2012, according to data recently released, with overall revenue generated from cruise arrivals ballooning by over 850 percent to just under $400 million per annum over the same period.

Concerns about value-added tax (VAT) expressed by Barbados Central Bank Governor Delisle Worrell underscore the importance of approaching VAT or any tax reform “with great caution and the value of broad public and private sector stakeholder collaboration and buy-in up-front,” according to the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association.
